Approached by a creative, young, couple with a love for all that is raw, crude and industrial, A Collective were assigned the task of redefining the staircase and access points of this duplex apartment in the heart of Lija. The structural alterations were put into place to allow the main entrance to be visually connected to the living spaces located at a raised intermediate level, allowing visitors to be immediately immersed into the property. Additional alterations made way for the staircase leading to the roof garden to become a sculptural feature within the internal entertainment space. As a result of these alterations the natural light was carried deeper into the space and the flow was made clear and structured.
Although the access to the roof is located at the centre of the living space, the staircase has been conceived as a light and airy structure. Set on a very tight footprint the proposed steel and timber staircase is designed to integrate underlying storage whilst retaining its slenderness. The railings are formed using an expanded steel mesh which although encloses the stairwell is perforated and unobtrusive. The plywood topping brings in warmth and eliminates the reverberating sound of the steel treads.
